When was the last time you read an actual road map? Anymore we all type in the address on our car navigation or on our Google map app on our phone and hit start, right? But what if you didn’t have satellite service in the area you were in? Would you be able to figure out where to go from a paper map?

National Read a Road Map Day just passed on April 5th. It challenged us to test our skills. It is also a great opportunity to teach the younger generations in your life how to read a map if they aren’t sure. They rely so heavily on online support that sometimes we must take time and teach them the basics we know ourselves so that they can succeed in any situation in life they may find themselves in.

Reading a road map takes some practice. Understanding the different symbols, exits and distances are helpful for planning your course. Familiarize yourself with a paper road map and take a short trip. Are you confident in where you are going after reading the map? Are you aware of the different routes you could take?

Map reading takes a little practice but once you have the hang of it, you won’t have to worry about being lost if your phone dies or your service goes down. This is especially important if you are taking a longer road trip to areas you don’t know.  You want to have a backup for directions in case you need it. You also want to make sure everyone with you knows the route you are taking, how to read the map and how to make changes if needed.
