Imagine coming home from a family outing one weekend to find that your home has been broken into.  You have a sudden rush of emotions.  Your belongings are gone, your privacy has been invaded, your sense of safety has been shattered.  Your family is in tears and scared.

While no one ever wants this to happen to them, statistics show that home invasion happens frequently.  According to the US Department of Justice, FBI, in 2019 approximately 11.5 people out of 10,000 fell victim to property crime.

41% of burglars claim that robbery was an impulsive decision based on an opportunity that presented itself and 83% of burglars look to see if a home has an alarm system before making a decision to break in.

As a homeowner, one of your top priorities is keeping your property and family safe from intruders. With the advent of smart homes and new technology, home security is easier and more affordable than ever.

The following are some new technologies that can protect
you and your loved ones from criminals:

  • Doorbell cameras—Doorbell cameras are a great way to see who is at the door before you open it. This is especially useful if you have children who are frequently home alone.
  • Smart door locks—Smart door locks allow you to lock or unlock your doors remotely. This can be helpful if you forget to lock your doors before you leave the house.
  • Motion sensors—Homeowners can attach motion sensors to doors and windows. Even the slightest movement can trigger these devices and alert you to intruders.

Above all, it’s important to have a strong security system in place. These systems should include Wi-Fi-enabled cameras, smart smoke detectors and an alarm system that notifies the authorities in an emergency.

Another important thing to remember is not to post your comings and goings on social media.  If you are taking a vacation the last thing you want to do is post pictures and let people know you are gone and for how long. If the wrong person sees that post your home has now become top of the list for a home invasion especially if you don’t have a security system in place.

Always proceed with caution on social media and make sure that you do all you can in order to protect your home in the best way possible for your family.
