Health and fitness needs change over the years. When you are young you feel like you can conquer the world. Then you get a little older and feel like you must prove to everyone that you can still conquer the world…just a little slower maybe😉
Then if you are fortunate, you reach your senior years and health, and fitness is just as important. It is part of what got you to this point in your life already!
May 25th is National Senior Health and Fitness Day.
Roughly 100,000 seniors will be spending this day participating in activities all over the country. There are a lot of special events held that day by various organizations.
Exercise doesn’t have to be hard either. You have many options including a workout at home, a community pool or events held at a local business. Most activities can be modified to fit where you are at and what your body can comfortably handle.
The goal of exercise is to build your strength and keep yourself in good condition. It should not be a competition. You are only competing against yourself. Exercise looks different for everyone. It may be walking, swimming, light weightlifting, yoga, chair exercises. Whatever makes your heart pump a bit and gets you moving.
A gentle workout has a lot of benefits for a senior, including:
- Increased balance so you have less of a chance of falling
- The ability to keep doing things for yourself that allow you to live independently
- Maintaining your strength and muscle mass
- Helps with blood pressure regularity
- Helps to minimize anxiety and calm the nervous system
- Offers companionship when you exercise with others you enjoy spending time with.
Start easy if you have been out of practice with exercise for a while, recently had an energy, or just know that your body can’t keep up with the younger version of you.
