Energy Savings Tips

January 10th is National Cut Your Energy Costs Day. This is a day that reminds us to explore our options for energy to make sure we are paying the best price and keeping up with any maintenance in our homes that could be affecting our energy and costing us more money.

Here are some small ways you can save money and use less energy at home:

  • Program your thermostats
  • Turn off lights when leaving a room
  • Use energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Run dishwasher and washing machine only when full
  • Lower water heater temperature
  • Take shorter showers
  • Unplug unused appliances

Here are some larger ways you can save money and use less energy at home:

  • Weatherproof your home
  • Tune up your heating system
  • Install energy-efficient windows
  • Install an energy-efficient furnace
  • Keep your furnace maintained
  • Use solar energy if possible

There are so many ways you can cut energy costs that don’t take much to implement. Putting even small steps in place can create energy and financial savings all year.

Here’s how to start making changes:

List all the changes you want to make in 2 columns.  The first column will be for small changes you can make right away.  The second column will be for bigger projects that you may need to save up for or that may take a little longer to put in place.

Next, put a plan together on how you are going to make these improvements and what the time frame and priority for each one will be.

Each improvement you make will help you to save energy costs and over time you may see significant savings depending on how many changes you have made.

Keep track of your changes as you go so you have them on record.  This will come in handy if you sell your house down the line as well to show all that was done and how efficient your home will be for the new owner.

If you need any help with your homeowner’s insurance, please don’t hesitate to contact us here at John Scott Insurance Agency.
